An Open Letter to My Three Daughters

Dear Daughters,

First of all, I love you to the moon, beyond, and back again. I’ve never known such a strong love until I became a mother and I have you three to thank for that. I will love you, protect you, nourish you and guide you in every way I know how. I will mess up and make a lot of mistakes (LOTS), but that will never, ever mean anything less about you, nor will it mean anything less about me, except the fact that I am human, just like you.

I want you to know that I have high hopes and dreams for you. I dream that you will grow up into strong, confident women in this world. That you will follow your passion, regardless of what anyone else says or thinks. I don’t care if that means being a street sweeper, a dancer, a scientist, or the President of the United States. If it fuels you, then I want you to go for it. Passion is contagious, and if you follow your heart, you will be an inspiration for others and you will also teach them that they can do the same.

I want you to be mindful of other people and how your choices affect those around you and the environment in which you live. Every person has a story to tell and there is not one person who is inherently “better” than another (although you will receive lots of messages that may tell you otherwise). Every action you take either makes the world we live in a better or worse place for ourselves, our communities and the generations to come. What resources you use, how you spend your money, the food you eat and the clothes you wear are all connected to larger systems. And those systems have big impacts on our planet. As insignificant as some actions feel, they are not. Every action creates a reaction, so please choose wisely.

I want you to have a voice and feel confident in speaking your mind, but to be mindful of the words you choose, as words are powerful messengers and you should be aware of how other people may perceive them. Be bold with sensitivity.

I want you to love your bodies and choose wisely what you put into them. Your body is your home and your vehicle for expression. Fuel it with the best and most nourishing foods (but also forgive yourself if you do not).

I want you to own your femininity and not feel a need to hide it. Our world needs more female energy. Use heart and intuition and don’t ever be afraid to feel your emotions or let others do the same.

I want you to know that life will not be easy. To say it will would be a mirage. There will surely be times that you experience intense joy, happiness and contentment and I hope you will cherish all those moments for what they are, but there will also be times when you experience tragedy, loneliness and intense anger. Our world is not a perfect place and we have lots of healing to do as a planet. We need to find a balance between allowing ourselves to experience the beauty and at the same time not ignore the tragic realities that actually exist in our political system, food system, economy and how we treat one another.

I want so many things for you. I will push you and I will challenge you and there will be times when you won’t like me but that doesn’t mean I will ever stop loving you.

Be bold, be courageous, be sensitive and have heart, but most importantly, be you, and always know that is enough.

Love, Mom.
